55 à 57 Troisième groupe : dix villes, au nord-est des deux premiers groupes.

Maon : patrie de Nabal (1Samuel 25.2) ; à la frontière du désert de Juda qui s'appelle là désert de Maon (1Samuel 23.25) ; aujourd'hui Tell-Maïn, à quatre heures au sud d'Hébron.

Carmel (1Samuel 25.2) : mentionnée sous Ozias ; à l'époque romaine bourgade importante ; aujourd'hui Kermel, un peu au nord de Maon.

Ziph : dans le désert de ce nom, (1Samuel 23.15) ; ville fortifiée par Roboarn (2Chroniques 11.8) ; aujourd'hui Tell-Zif, sur un rocher de trente mètres de haut, à une heure et trois quarts au sud-est d'Hébron.

Juta : ville lévitique (21.16) ; aujourd'hui Jata, gros bourg à 8 km au sud d'Hébron.

      14 David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God didn't deliver him into his hand.
      15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph in the wood.
      25 Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told, he went down to the rock, and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. When Saul heard that, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.
