Le texte reçu porte : "Voici, votre maison vous est laissée déserte. Mais en vérité, je vous dis."

Les deux mots soulignés ne sont pas authentiques.

Le mot déserte est douteux même dans Matthieu, d'où il parait avoir été introduit dans le texte de Luc.

Jésus veut donc dire : "Quand je m'en serai allé, votre maison (votre ville, votre temple) vous reste encore pour un temps, sous la protection divine ; mais, dans votre abandon, je ne vous apparaîtrai plus comme Sauveur."

Je vous dis que vous ne me verrez plus jusqu'à ce qu'arrive (le jour) où vous direz, d'après A, D et le texte reçu ; ou, jusqu'à ce que vous disiez, d'après Sin., B, et quelques majuscules La première leçon est préférable.

D'après la place que Luc assigne à ces paroles, quelques interprètes pensent que les derniers mots désignent le moment prochain où Jésus fera son entrée à Jérusalem, le jour des Rameaux, et où ses adhérents de la Galilée le salueront en s'écriant : Béni soit celui qui vient au nom du Seigneur !

Mais quelle mesquine interprétation d'une pensée énoncée sous une forme si solennelle et précédée de la plainte douloureuse du verset 34 ! Non, il s'agit du sévère jugement de Dieu, d'après lequel le peuple d'Israël sera privé de la présence du Sauveur jusqu'au jour de son retour dans la gloire, jour où tous ceux qui auront cru en lui le recevront avec cette acclamation si connue et sacrée pour des Israélites. (Psaumes 118.26)

- A moins d'admettre la supposition, très peu vraisemblable, de quelques interprètes (Stier), que Jésus a prononcé deux fois ces solennelles paroles, il faut choisir entre Matthieu et Luc. On ne peut nier qu'il y ait dans Luc une liaison très naturelle entre nos deux versets et les paroles de Jésus qui précèdent.

Mais comme la circonstance où les place Matthieu est plus solennelle et plus vraie ! Avec lui, nous sommes à Jérusalem même, la ville ingrate et rebelle, à laquelle Jésus adresse directement ce dernier cri de douleur, à la suite de son grand discours contre les chefs de la théocratie juive.

Les mots : combien de fois ai-je voulu...rappellent à cette cité les diverses visites de Jésus, que nous connaissons par saint Jean et que supposent les synoptiques.

C'est aux habitants de Jérusalem encore que Jésus dit, au moment de les quitter pour toujours : votre maison vous est laissée.

Et enfin, ce n'est qu'à ce moment suprême qu'il pouvait ajouter : vous ne me verrez plus. Ces paroles seraient inexplicables dans la situation où Luc les fait prononcer, puisque Jérusalem allait bientôt revoir le Seigneur qui, durant une semaine entière, fera entendre dans ses murs quelques-uns de ses plus solennels appels.
