Hébreu / Grec - Texte original © καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ δικαιοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁ δὲ θεὸς γινώσκει τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν· ὅτι τὸ ἐν ἀνθρώποις ὑψηλὸν βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.

World English Bible He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

C'était déjà pour se justifier, ou paraître justes, devant les hommes, que les pharisiens se raillaient de l'enseignement de Jésus sur l'emploi des richesses, et toute leur vie avait cette même tendance. (Matthieu 23.28)

Mais aux yeux de Dieu qui connaît les cœurs, et qui ne voyait sous leurs faux airs de vertu et de moralité que des vices recouverts par l'hypocrisie, leur prétendue élévation était une abomination.

Il ne faut pas entendre cette sentence dans un sens absolu ni l'appliquer à toute élévation quelconque. Avec de la sincérité et de l'humilité, ce qui est grand aux yeux des hommes peut l'être aussi devant Dieu.
