"Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

As these went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.

Annas the high priest was there, with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and as many as were relatives of the high priest.
- Au moment solennel où l'apparition du précurseur annonce celle du Sauveur lui-même, Luc tient à marquer la place de ce grand événement dans le cadre de l'histoire de son temps. De là ces données chronologiques si précises. Son regard se porte d'abord sur l'empire, puis sur les différentes parties de la terre sainte et de ses environs, enfin sur les autorités théocratiques du peuple juif.
- Tibère succéda à Auguste (Luc 2.1) le 19 août de l'an 14 de notre ère ; la quinzième de son règne tombait donc sur l'an 28 ou 29. Jésus, étant né quatre ans avant notre ère, (Matthieu 2.1, note) avait alors trente-deux ou trente-trois ans. Il faut donc regarder l'indication du verset 23 comme approximative, ainsi que le montre l'expression "environ trente ans."
D'autres pensent que Luc compte les années du règne de Tibère du moment où Auguste l'associa à l'empire, ce qu'il fit deux ans avant sa mort. Nous serions alors en 26 et Jésus aurait eu trente ans exactement lors de son baptême ; mais cette manière de compter les années d'un règne est sans analogie chez les historiens anciens.
- Pilate ne portait que le titre de procurateur, ou intendant de l'empereur. Mais en Judée, comme dans quelques autres districts, ce fonctionnaire était chargé de toute l'administration, et s'appelait gouverneur. Depuis la destitution d'Archélaüs, fils d'Hérode, (Matthieu 2.22) en l'an 6 de notre ère, la Judée formait, avec la Samarie et l'Idumée, une annexe de la province de Syrie. Pilate y arriva quelques années seulement avant le ministère de Jean-Baptiste et, après un gouvernement de dix ans (26-36 après J.-C.), il fut révoqué. (Josèphe, Antiq. XVIII, 4, 2.)
- Hérode Antipas, second fils d'Hérode le Grand, gouvernait la Galilée et la Pérée, avec le titre de tétrarque, qui désignait originairement le souverain de la quatrième partie d'un royaume, mais qui, dans la suite, fut appliqué à de petits princes dépendants des Romains. Hérode Antipas régna depuis la mort de son père en l'an 4 avant Jésus-Christ, jusqu'en l'an 39 de notre ère (Comparer sur le caractère de ce prince Matthieu 14.1 et suivants ; Marc 6.14 et suivants, notes.)
- Philippe, autre fils d'Hérode et frère du précédent, régnait sur l'Iturée et la Trachonite, auxquelles l'historien Josèphe (Antiq. XV, 10, 1) ajoute la Batanée et l'Auranitide, provinces situées au nord-est de la Galilée, près des montagnes du Liban. Philippe régna de l'an 4 avant Jésus-Christ jusqu'à l'an 34 de notre ère.
- L'Abilène, ainsi nommée d'Abila, chef-lieu de cette province que gouvernait Lysanias, avec le titre de tétrarque, était également située près des montagnes du Liban. Ce Lysanias a souvent été confondu avec un de ses prédécesseurs du même nom, mentionné par Josèphe (Antiq. XV, 4,1), et l'on n'a pas manqué d'accuser l'évangéliste d'avoir commis ici un anachronisme. Mais il est aujourd'hui prouvé, par des inscriptions, qu'il existait sous le règne de Tibère un tétrarque Lysanias, descendant de l'ancien prince de ce nom. (Voir le Commentaire de M. Godet.)
- Enfin Luc, après ces indications relatives à l'état politique du monde, caractérise la situation théocratique et religieuse. Le texte reçu porte ici : (grec) sous les souverains sacrificateurs Anne et Caïphe ; erreur de copiste, ou prétendue correction : on pensait qu'avec ces deux noms propres il fallait un titre au pluriel. Le texte authentique (tous les majuscules) porte : sous le souverain sacrificateur Anne et Caïphe. Il ne pouvait y avoir deux souverains sacrificateurs.
Anne, beau-père de Caïphe, avait été destitué par le prédécesseur de Pilate, et Caïphe était le seul titulaire actuel. Mais, soit à cause de sa parenté avec ce dernier, soit parce que les Juifs ne voulaient pas reconnaître ces empiétements de l'autorité païenne sur leurs institutions religieuses, Anne continuait à s'arroger le titre et partageait avec son gendre l'autorité sacerdotale. De là la tournure inusitée par laquelle Luc exprime cet état de choses. La même idée ressort du récit de Jean. (Jean 18.13,24 ; comparez Actes 4.6)
Grec : la parole de Dieu fut sur Jean ; il reçut par cette parole sa vocation de prophète. (Comparer Jérémie 1.2 ; Osée 1.1 et ailleurs.) Malgré les prédictions qui, à l'époque de sa naissance, avaient proclamé le rôle qu'il devait jouer, Jean n'entra dans son ministère que sur l'appel exprès de Dieu. (Jean 1.33)
- Les mots : dans le désert, rappellent la solitude profonde ou vécut Jean jusqu'au moment "de sa manifestation à Israël." (Luc 1.80)
