C'était, sans doute, par une vive reconnaissance que le démoniaque guéri voulait suivre Jésus ; il pensait qu'auprès de son bienfaiteur il serait plus sûrement à l'abri des maux terribles qu'il avait soufferts.

Pourquoi Jésus ne le lui permit-il pas ? Les belles paroles qui suivent (verset 19) répondent abondamment à cette question. Jésus veut laisser cet homme dans sa maison, auprès des siens, pour être, à l'égard de tous, à la fois un monument et un prédicateur de la miséricorde divine.

Et c'est ce qu'il fut, en effet. Il publia dans la contrée entière (grec quelles choses) quelles grandes choses le Seigneur lui avait faites. (verset 20)

- S'étonneraiton de l'ordre que Jésus donne à cet homme, tandis qu'ailleurs il interdisait à des malades guéris de proclamer ses bienfaits ? (Matthieu 8.4, note.)

La raison de cette différence est bien simple : ici, dans cette contrée écartée, il n'avait point à craindre que le bruit de ses miracles provoquât un faux enthousiasme parmi le peuple ou la haine de ses adversaires, comme c'était le cas en Galilée et en Judée.

      23 how the Christ must suffer, and how, by the resurrection of the dead, he would be first to proclaim light both to these people and to the Gentiles."
      24 As he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are crazy! Your great learning is driving you insane!"
