  La naissance de Jésus-Christ
  
  18 Or la naissance de Jésus Christ arriva ainsi : sa mère, Marie, étant fiancée à Joseph, avant qu'ils fussent ensemble, se trouva enceinte par l'Esprit Saint.
  
  19 Joseph, son mari, étant juste, et ne voulant pas faire d'elle un exemple, se proposa de la répudier secrètement.
  
  20 Mais comme il méditait sur ces choses, voici, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe, disant : Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre auprès de toi Marie ta femme, car ce qui a été conçu en elle est de l'Esprit Saint ;
  
  21 et elle enfantera un fils, et tu appelleras son nom Jésus, car c'est lui qui sauvera son peuple de leurs péchés.
  
  22 Or tout cela arriva, afin que fût accompli ce que le Seigneur a dit par le prophète, disant :
  
  23 "Voici, la vierge sera enceinte et enfantera un fils, et on appellera son nom Emmanuel", ce qui, interprété, est : Dieu avec nous.
  
  24 Or Joseph, étant réveillé de son sommeil, fit comme l'ange du Seigneur le lui avait ordonné, et prit sa femme auprès de lui ;
  
  25 et il ne la connut point jusqu'à ce qu'elle eût enfanté son fils premier-né ; et il appela son nom Jésus.

  18 Voici de quelle manière arriva la naissance de Jésus Christ. Marie, sa mère, ayant été fiancée à Joseph, se trouva enceinte, par la vertu du Saint Esprit, avant qu'ils eussent habité ensemble.
  
  19 Joseph, son époux, qui était un homme de bien et qui ne voulait pas la diffamer, se proposa de rompre secrètement avec elle.
  
  20 Comme il y pensait, voici, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe, et dit : Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre avec toi Marie, ta femme, car l'enfant qu'elle a conçu vient du Saint Esprit ;
  
  21 elle enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus ; c'est lui qui sauvera son peuple de ses péchés.
  
  22 Tout cela arriva afin que s'accomplît ce que le Seigneur avait annoncé par le prophète :
  
  23 Voici, la vierge sera enceinte, elle enfantera un fils, et on lui donnera le nom d'Emmanuel, ce qui signifie Dieu avec nous.
  
  24 Joseph s'étant réveillé fit ce que l'ange du Seigneur lui avait ordonné, et il prit sa femme avec lui.

  11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the exile to Babylon.
  
  12 After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.
  
  13 Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.
  
  14 Azor became the father of Sadoc. Sadoc became the father of Achim. Achim became the father of Eliud.
  
  15 Eliud became the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan. Matthan became the father of Jacob.
  
  16 Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus , who is called Christ.
  
  17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

  18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
  
  19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
  
  20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
  
  21 She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
  
  22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
  
  23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel"; which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
  
  24 Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
  
  25 and didn't know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

Chapitre 1 : Généalogie de Jésus-Christ. Sa naissance

1 à 17 Généalogie

On pourrait traduire aussi : livre de la naissance, ce qui fait que quelques-uns ont étendu ce titre aux deux premiers chapitres qui racontent la naissance de Jésus-Christ, d'autres même à tout notre évangile. Mais cette expression étant dans les Septante la traduction ordinaire de l'hébreu sepher tholedoth, livre des générations ou des familles Genèse 5.1 et ailleurs, c'est-à-dire liste généalogique, il est évident que c'est dans ce sens qu'il faut l'entendre. Sur ces deux noms de Jésus-Christ qui se trouvent ici dès la première ligne du N.T., voir verset 16. note.

Le but de l'évangile de Matthieu est de mettre en évidence le rapport intime et vivant des deux alliances, de montrer en Jésus-Christ l'accomplissement de toute l'histoire de son peuple. (Voir l'introd.) Or ce but, l'évangéliste le manifeste dès les premières lignes de son livre, par cette généalogie dont la signification est marquée d'abord par les deux grands noms de David et d'Abraham ; - David, dans la famille duquel devait, selon la prophétie, naître celui dont la royauté serait éternelle Psaumes 132.11 ; Esaïe 11.1 ; Jérémie 23.5 comparez Actes 13.23 ; Romains 1.3 - Abraham, dans la postérité duquel devaient être bénies toutes les familles de la terre, promesse qui n'a de sens et d'accomplissement qu'en Jésus-Christ. Genèse 12.3 ; 22.18 comparez Galates 3.14-16

Le Fils de Dieu est venu prendre sa place dans cette postérité d'Abraham et dans notre humanité qu'il devait renouveler. S'il ne s'était agi pour lui que d'apporter au monde des révélations nouvelles, une longue série de traditions aurait suffi et peut-être aurions-nous trouvé ici, au lieu d'une généalogie, le catalogue des livres de l'Ancien Testament. Mais la bénédiction promise à Abraham devait se réaliser dans sa postérité, et consister en une création nouvelle, commencée dans la personne même du Libérateur. De là une généalogie qui n'a pas seulement pour but d'établir la filiation historique de celui-ci.

-Mais, objecte-t-on, cette généalogie est celle de Joseph, (verset 16) et dès lors ne répond plus au but que vous lui attribuez. Il parait que l'évangéliste en a jugé autrement, puisque, d'une part, il met un soin particulier à écarter la paternité de Joseph (versets 16,18-21) et que, de l'autre, il conserve la généalogie. C'est qu'en remontant jusqu'à David et jusqu'à Abraham, il indique aussi l'origine généalogique de Marie, mère du Sauveur. Il donne à entendre que le "fils de David, fils Abraham," descend de ces grands personnages par sa mère, puisque ce n'est pas Joseph qui est son père.

Mais ce premier but atteint, la généalogie de Joseph n'était pas inutile aux yeux d'un Israélite. Durant tout le temps de sa vie, Jésus fut envisagé comme fils de Joseph Luc 3.23 ; 4.22 ; Jean 6.42 et il devait l'être en vertu des plus hautes convenances. Mais, de plus, il y avait dans cette opinion ceci de fondé, que Joseph conférait à son fils adoptif un droit légal théocratique à la royauté, d'abord parce qu'il était lui-même descendant de David, (verset 20) et ensuite parce que, en épousant Marie qui était, comme on le suppose généralement, héritière du nom de sa famille Nombres 27.8, il entrait légalement dans la lignée de sa femme et en prenait le nom. Néhémie 7.63 Quoi qu'il en soit de cette dernière opinion, qui n'est qu'une hypothèse vraisemblable, il est certain que le but de Matthieu est de constater la double origine de Jésus-Christ, telle qu'elle est révélée par le témoignage unanime du Nouveau Testament, savoir, sa descendance de David : Luc 1.27 ; Actes 2.30 ; 2Timothée 2.8 ; Apocalypse 5.5 ; 22.16 ; Romains 1.3 comparez Matthieu 22.42 ; Marc 12.35 ; Luc 20.41 et en même temps sa naissance surnaturelle. (versets 18,20)

Matthieu, surnommé Lévi, était avant sa conversion, un publicain, ou collecteur de taxes pour les Romains, à Capernaüm. Il est admis généralement qu'il a écrit son évangile avant tous les autres évangélistes. Le contenu de cet évangile, et les évidences mises en lumière par des écrivains antiques, montrent qu'il a été écrit essentiellement à l'usage de la nation juive.

L'accomplissement de la prophétie était considéré par les Juifs comme quelque chose d'évident, et c'est là-dessus que s'appuie spécialement Matthieu. Nous trouvons là une sélection de quelques parties de la vie de notre Sauveur, passée ici-bas, et de ses discours qui conviennent bien pour éveiller la nation juive à la notion de ses péchés ; pour anéantir ses attentes erronées d'un royaume terrestre ; pour diminuer sa fierté et sa vanité ; pour lui apprendre la nature spirituelle et l'ampleur de l'évangile ; pour la préparer à l'admission du Païen dans l'église.

* La généalogie de Jésus. (Matthieu 1:1-17) Un ange apparaît à Joseph. (Matthieu 1:18-25)

Matthieu 1:1-17 Remarquons le but principal de cette généalogie de notre Sauveur, elle est digne d’intérêt : elle n’est pas l’objet d’une vaine gloire, comme c'est bien souvent le cas de celles des grands hommes. Elle prouve que notre Seigneur Jésus vient bien de la nation et de la famille d'où le Messie devait provenir. Des promesses, d’abord de bénédiction, ont été faites à Abraham et sa postérité, puis d'autorité, à David et à sa descendance. Il a été en effet promis à ces deux patriarches que Christ devait naître de leur descendance, Ge 12:3;22:18,2Samuel 7:12;Psaume 89:3;132:11.

En conséquence, si Jésus n’eut été descendant de David, et d'Abraham, il n'aurait pas été le Messie. Ce fait est maintenant prouvé, d’après les registres généalogiques bien connus. Quand le Fils de Dieu a désiré revêtir notre nature, Il est venu ici-bas, partager notre condition d’abaissement et de misère ; mais Il était parfaitement exempt de tout péché. Quand nous lisons les différents noms de cette généalogie, nous ne devons pas oublier à quel point s'est abaissé le Seigneur de gloire, dans le but de sauver la race humaine.
