Il faut remarquer le soin avec lequel ces derniers mots de la généalogie écartent l'idée que Joseph fut le père de Jésus. Il est bien appelé mari ou époux de Marie ; mais cette répétition constante du mot engendra cesse ici tout à coup et se trouve remplacée par ces termes : de laquelle est né Jésus. (Comparer versets 18-25)

- Jésus, en hébreu Jehoschoua, même nom que celui de Josué Exode 24.13, signifie Jéhova est Sauveur, et le récit qui va suivre (verset 21) rend le lecteur attentif à la belle signification de ce nom :

- Christ, en hébreu Maschiah, grec Messias Jean 1.42 ; 4.25 signifie OINT. Ce nom indiquait dans l'Ancien Testament la dignité royale, parce qu'on oignait d'huile, symbole de l'Esprit de Dieu, les rois, qui étaient ainsi consacrés pour leur charge. Il en était de même des sacrificateurs et des prophètes. 1Samuel 24.7,11 ; Psaumes 2.2 ; Esaïe 45.1 ; Daniel 9.25,26 ; Lévitique 4.3,5,16 ; 1Rois 19.16

Jésus-Christ qui, pour réaliser l'idée de l'ancienne alliance dans la nouvelle, a rempli ces trois charges, était donc, par excellence, l'oint de l'Eternel, et c'est sous ce nom de Messie, emprunté surtout au Psaumes 2 et à Daniel 9.25,26, que son peuple l'attendait.

Lui-même, en prêchant dès l'entrée de son ministère un royaume de Dieu dont il était le Chef, a donné à cette notion toute sa vérité et sa spiritualité. Aussi, dans son Eglise, le titre de Christ devint peu à peu un nom propre, mais sans rien perdre de sa haute signification. Ce n'est point sans intention que les écrivains sacrés l'appellent tantôt Jésus, tantôt le Christ, ou lui donnent ce double nom de Jésus-Christ, comme le fait notre évangile dès la première ligne.
