- On s'est étonné de voir, dans le récit de Matthieu, des délégués de ces deux sectes ennemies s'unir pour tenter Jésus. Mais qu'on se souvienne de Pilate et d'Hérode devenus amis. (Luc 23.12)

Ne voit-on pas très souvent les partis les plus opposés se coaliser pour atteindre certains buts ? Cette association des pharisiens et des sadducéens marque un nouveau progrès dans l'opposition contre Jésus.

- Quelques interprètes ont voulu identifier cette demande d'un signe avec celle que Matthieu a rapportée à Matthieu 12.38. Mais pourquoi les adversaires n'auraient-ils pas eu recours plus d'une fois à la même ruse ?

Il s'agit d'ailleurs ici d'autre chose, d'un signe venant du ciel et apparaissant à la vue. (Matthieu 24.29 et suivants Actes 2.19) Ces hommes savaient que Jésus ne le produirait pas, ils comptaient en profiter pour persuader aux foules qu'il n'était pas le Messie.

Les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens étaient opposés quant à leurs principes et leur conduite ; ils s’unirent cependant, pour s’opposer à Christ. Ils désiraient qu’Il leur montre un signe, de leur propre choix : ils méprisaient en effet les miracles de Jésus, guérissant malades et affligés ; ils réclamaient d’autres prodiges, qui puissent satisfaire leur curiosité et leur vanité.

Nous sommes dans une grande hypocrisie, quand nous négligeons les signes venant de Dieu, en recherchant plutôt ceux que peut produire notre propre imagination...
