Troisième degré de la répréhension. Jésus a déjà employé ce mot d'Eglise, (Matthieu 16.18, note) et il le pouvait, puisque quelques disciples réunis autour de lui formaient déjà une Eglise. Dans cette parole-ci, son regard se porte sur Avenir. Il entend non l'Eglise universelle comme Matthieu 16.18, mais une Eglise locale, une assemblée de chrétiens, devant laquelle peut être portée et fraternellement traitée une cause comme celle dont il s'agit. Jésus n'a donc en vue ni les apôtres seuls, ni les anciens ou chefs de l'Eglise, ni les évêques futurs, ni la synagogue juive (Calvin et d'autres), mais une assemblée de chrétiens, à laquelle il attribue l'autorité nécessaire pour exercer un acte de discipline, parce qu'il suppose qu'elle est animée de l'Esprit de Dieu et éclairée par sa Parole, selon laquelle elle jugera.

Termes empruntés au langage des Juifs pour désigner un étranger qui n'appartient point au peuple de Dieu. Cet homme qui prétend être un frère, a résisté à tous les moyens de conviction, méprisé l'avis et la décision de tous ses frères et même l'autorité du Sauveur qui a donné cette instruction, par là il s'est exclu lui-même de leur communion.

Il ne s'agit pas d'une excommunication prononcée par l'Eglise, qui seule pourtant en aurait le droit, Jésus autorise simplement l'offensé qui a tout fait pour gagner son frère, à n'avoir plus de relations fraternelles avec celui qui s'endurcit dans son impénitence. La charité toutefois ne saurait cesser, (verset 22, note) car un chrétien aime même un païen et un péager.
