Aux guerres et aux troubles entre les nations et les royaumes viendront s'ajouter des calamités naturelles, telles que des famines et des tremblements de terre. (Entre ces deux mots, le texte reçu ajoute avec C, la plupart des majuscules, les versions syriaques et égyptiennes, et des pestes.)

Le théâtre de tous ces événements sera non seulement la Palestine, mais le vaste empire romain où, dans chaque province, vivaient des juifs, et où bientôt le christianisme fut répandu.

L'historien Tacite fait des calamités de ces temps une description qui montre comment s'est accomplie cette prophétie. "J'entre, dit il, dans l'histoire d'un temps riche en malheurs, cruel par les batailles, déchiré par les révoltes, tourmenté jusque dans la paix. Quatre empereurs ont été tués par l'épée ; trois guerres civiles au dedans, plusieurs autres au dehors, souvent deux à la fois, ont troublé l'empire. L'Illyrie était remplie de troubles, la Gaule prête à se révolter, la Bretagne, subjuguée, a secoué le joug ; les tribus sarmates et les Suèves se sont soulevés, les Daces sont devenus célèbres par leurs guerres civiles, les Parthes ont couru aux armes, excités par un faux Néron. L'Italie a été remplie de mille malheurs souvent répétés ; des villes ont été englouties ou ébranlées par des tremblements de terre, sur les côtes fertiles de la Campanie ; Rome a été dévastée par des incendies, le Capitole mis en feu par les mains des citoyens...Noblesse, richesse, honneur, tout est devenu crime, et la vertu le plus sûr chemin de la ruine."
