Les circonstances de la vocation de ces quatre disciples (verset 21) ont paru à quelques interprètes être en contradiction avec le récit de Jean, (Jean 1.37 et suivants) dont la scène est aux lieux mêmes où le précurseur baptisait, et avant son emprisonnement, tandis que, selon Matthieu, cette vocation a eu lieu en Galilée, après cet événement. (Comparer verset 12, note.)

Ils objectent encore que, d'après le récit de Jean, Jésus connaissait ces disciples, tandis que Matthieu semble raconter une première rencontre avec eux. A cela on peut répondre que dans sa première rencontre avec ses disciples, rapportée par Jean, Jésus les appela à la foi ; que dans celle-ci, qui est identique avec Luc 5.1 et suivants, il les appelle au ministère. On peut distinguer même une troisième vocation à l'apostolat proprement dit. Matthieu 10.2-14
