C'est sur gage... ! En Israël l'emprunteur offrait toujours une garantie, une hypothèque, un gage, et, dans la pratique, le créancier usait souvent, en cas d'insolvabilité, du droit qui lui était ainsi conféré. Voir Deutéronome 24.10 ; Job 22.6 ; 24.3 ; 2Rois 4.1 et suivants ; Matthieu 18.25, et ici même, versets 3 et 4. De là des familles ruinées et des divisions profondes dans le sein du peuple de Dieu. Néhémie en appelle ici à l'esprit de la loi : d'après Exode 22.22-27 il faut soigneusement éviter de molester les petits et de commettre des injustices au nom de la stricte justice.
