La liberté humaine est un privilège tellement précieux que Dieu la respecte jusque dans ses écarts. L'Eternel ne revient point à la position précédente, maintenant dépassée ; il suit Balaam dans la phase nouvelle où il vient d'entrer : Ma défense ne t'a pas suffi. Soit ! N'en tiens pas compte. Puisque malgré tout tu veux aller et parler, va donc et parle ! Mais sache que c'est une pente glissante que le chemin sur lequel tu t'engages. Prends garde à la manière dont tu parleras.

Dieu aurait tiré sa gloire du refus absolu de Balaam, surtout s'il l'avait motivé comme l'Eternel lui-même, verset 12. Mais il se réserve de la tirer plus magnifiquement encore de sa parole, pourvu qu'il résiste à la tentation au devant de laquelle il marche. Ainsi s'explique le consentement qu'il lui accorde. En même temps l'avertissement qu'il lui donne doit lui faire comprendre qu'il pourrait bien être appelé à faire le sacrifice de son salaire, s'il est fidèle ; sinon, qu'il expiera sa désobéissance.
