10 à 17 La joie de Dieu sur Israël a été courte ; la conduite d'Israël y a promptement mis fin.

Dans le désert : là où on ne pouvait compter sur une telle trouvaille.

Un fruit précoce sur un jeune figuier : sur un arbre duquel on n'espérait encore rien de semblable, vu sa jeunesse, et à une saison où l'on ne pouvait s'y attendre : double surprise qui dépeint d'une manière touchante la joie et l'amour de Dieu pour Israël naissant.

A Baal-Péor. Comparez Nombres 25.1-3. Cet exemple est choisi, entre beaucoup d'autres cas d'infidélité dont Israël s'était rendu coupable dès le début, parce que dans cette circonstance l'idolâtrie fut mêlée aux péchés de la chair, comme c'était le cas du temps d'Osée ; comparez 4.11-14.

A l'ignominie. Le terme hébreu boscheth est substitué ici, comme souvent, au nom de Baal.

Leur amant : Baal. En aimant l'abomination, ils sont devenus abominables.
