Après tous les motifs allégués par l'apôtre pour inviter les Philippiens à la persévérance et à la sanctification, il ne craint pas d'en appeler à leur amour pour lui, et de leur montrer quelle douce consolation dans ses souffrances actuelles, et quelle glorieuse espérance pour l'avenir il puisera dans la pensée de leur fidélité à leur vocation chrétienne.

- Les mots couru en vain rappellent une image souvent employée par l'apôtre, cette des courses dans la lice. (Philippiens 3.14 ; 1Corinthiens 9.24, etc.)

Travaillé en vain se rapporte plutôt au labeur dans un champ dont on attend la moisson.

"On peut et on doit désirer dès ce monde que la Parole de Dieu porte son fruit ; mais on ne doit désirer que fort modérément d'en goûter la douceur, si ce n'est comme saint Paul, au jour du jugement et en la présence du Seigneur." Quesnel.
