Tant que je me suis tu, sur la seule chose qu'il y eût à dire. Le coupable peut gémir, crier, parler même à Dieu de beaucoup d'autres choses : c'est comme s'il ne disait rien, tant qu'il ne confesse pas sa faute.

Mes os se sont consumés. L'interdit caché ronge comme un feu intérieur.

Il est très difficile pour un homme pécheur d'accepter humblement la gratuité de la rédemption, par le biais d'une confession totale des ses péchés et par une reconnaissance de sa culpabilité. Mais l'unique et véritable chemin de la conscience paisible passe par la confession de nos péchés afin qu'ils soient pardonnés ; par cette déclaration, nous pouvons être justifiés. Bien que la repentance et la confession ne soient pas aptes en elles-mêmes à procurer le pardon des transgressions, elles sont quand même nécessaires pour acquérir la joie parfaite du pardon miséricordieux. Et qui peut témoigner de la joie ressentie, lorsque l'âme, oppressée par le péché, peut librement décharger son fardeau devant Dieu, saisissant la promesse de miséricorde en Jésus-Christ ?

Ceux qui veulent vraiment s'adonner à la prière doivent rechercher le Seigneur ; Il les appelle par Sa Providence et par Son Esprit, Il les incite à cette recherche. C'est le moment propice, quand le cœur est plein de remords et chargé par ses fautes ; quand les refuges d'ici bas sont vains, quand aucun repos de l'âme ne peut être trouvé, c'est alors que Dieu peut appliquer son baume guérissant, par son Esprit.
