Ce verset est un premier trait de pinceau, qui reste incomplet ; le second stiche, qui devrait compléter le premier, fait défaut ; le psalmiste semble laisser deviner la vision qui remplit son esprit.

Il l'a fondée..., littéralement : sa fondation sur les saintes montagnes. D'après le suffixe hébreu, le mot sa désigne une fondation qui appartient à Dieu. Voilà pourquoi nous traduisons : Il l'a fondée, et non : Elle est fondée.

Les saintes montagnes : les collines sur lesquelles est bâtie Jérusalem. Elles étaient saintes avant même que la ville fût construite, à cause du choix que Dieu avait, fait d'elles, pour y placer un jour son sanctuaire. (Comparez Genèse 22.11 ; Michée 4.1 ; Esaïe 2.2-4)

Christ est le fondement de l'église, menée elle-même par Dieu. La sainteté est la force et la fermeté de l'église.

Ne soyons pas honteux vis à vis de l'église de Christ, lorsqu'elle se trouve placée dans une situation de faiblesse extrême, ou de médiocrité selon la vue de certains de ses membres, jusqu'à ce que les évènements glorieux mentionnés dans ces versets se réalisent. Aucune association humaine n'est comparable à celle qui représente l'église de Jésus-Christ.

Les choses glorieuses mentionnées en Sion, par l'Esprit, sont caractéristiques de la nature de Christ, de Son œuvre, de Sa fonction ; cette gloire représente l'église de l'évangile, les privilèges de ses membres, les cieux, la joie parfaite.
