Grec : Grâces à Dieu de ce que vous étiez esclaves du péché, mais avec obéi de cœur...

L'action de grâces porte seulement sur le fait qu'ils ont obéi ; la première proposition ne sert qu'à faire ressortir par le contraste (comparez Romains 5.8) l'heureux changement qui s'est produit en eux.

Les termes qui suivent sont choisis pour marquer la réceptivité des lecteurs : Vous avez obéi de cœur au type de doctrine auquel vous avez été confiés.

Le mot type dérive d'un verbe qui signifie "frapper ;" c'est l'empreinte, la forme, le modèle.

Le type de doctrine n'est pas la doctrine évangélique en général, la vérité chrétienne opposée au paganisme ou au judaïsme, car, s'il avait voulu désigner celleci, l'apôtre aurait parlé simplement d'obéissance à l'Evangile ou à Christ ; c'est ce que Paul appelle ailleurs à son Evangile, (Romains 2.16 ; 16.25 ; comparez Galates 1.11,12), l'Evangile du salut par grâce, par la foi, sans les œuvres de la loi.

Il ne faut pas traduire : "le modèle d'enseignement qui vous a été transmis," mais : "le modèle d'enseignement auquel vous avez été transmis, ou confiés"

Bengel remarque à ce sujet : "Ailleurs il est dit que la doctrine est transmise ; (2Pierre 2.21) ici les termes sont invertis pour marquer à quel changement de domination sont soumis ceux qui, affranchis du péché, subissent l'admirable servitude de la justice."

L'apôtre veut dire que les chrétiens de Rome ont été confiés, livrés, eux, par l'Esprit de Dieu, à ce type de la vérité évangélique, qu'ils ont été marqués de son empreinte, qu'ils ont été, en quelque sorte, jetés dans ce moule, comme une matière en fusion, pour en prendre la forme. Cependant leur adhésion à l'enseignement apostolique n'a rien eu d'involontaire, de machinal ; ils ont obéi de cœur, selon l'admirable harmonie de l'action de Dieu et de l'action de l'homme dans la conversion.

En constatant ce fait, Paul ne peut retenir l'expression de sa reconnaissance : Grâces à Dieu !
