Tel est le grand et saint motif de toutes ses exhortations ; l'apôtre indique aux esclaves qui trouvaient dans leur triste condition bien des obstacles à glorifier leur Dieu Sauveur.

"Plus vile est la condition des esclaves, plus la description de leur piété est glorieuse." Bengel.

Paul n'entre du reste pas, au sujet de l'esclavage, dans la question de principe. (Voir 1Corinthiens 7.21, note ; 1Timothée 6.1,2, note ; comparez Ephésiens 6.5-8)
