L'Eternel se repentit. Cette expression, souvent employée dans l'Ecriture, ne signifie pas que Dieu s'adresse à lui-même des reproches au sujet de la création de l'humanité. Dans ce sens l'Ecriture déclare que Dieu n'est pas homme pour se repentir (1Samuel 15.29).

Ce mot signifie seulement que l'homme ayant changé et, ne répondant plus à sa destination assignée de Dieu, Dieu change aussi à son égard. Si, une fois que l'homme se corrompt, il ne devenait pas pour Dieu un objet de déplaisir et non plus de satisfaction, ce serait Dieu lui-même qui changerait de caractère.

Dieu va défaire ce qu'il avait fait. Effacer l'homme de dessus la terre, c'est défaire l'œuvre du sixième jour ; détruire le bétail, les reptiles et les oiseaux, c'est défaire l'œuvre des cinquième et sixième ; peut-être le bouleversement atteint-il l'œuvre du quatrième, si la cause du déluge se trouve dans une perturbation astrale ; en tous cas l'œuvre du troisième est détruite aussi par la suppression de la limite entre les terres et les mers ; les eaux d'en-haut et les eaux d'en-bas, séparées au second jour, se confondent de nouveau ; c'est le retour au chaos, à ce premier jour où les eaux de l'abîme couvraient la terre.

Mais entre alors et maintenant il y a cette grande différence que ce n'est plus, l'Esprit de Dieu seulement qui plane sur l'étendue des eaux ; l'arche est là qui vogue, portant dans ses flancs tous les restes du monde ancien destinés à devenir les germes du monde nouveau.
