La première prophétie décrivait la défaite de l'armée égyptienne ; le sujet de celle-ci est l'invasion de l'Egypte elle-même par Nébucadnetsar, à la suite de sa victoire de Carkémis. Celle qui envahissait (verset 7) est envahie à son tour.

Sur la venue... Voir les notes sur 43.9-13. Il est probable que ce second discours a été écrit en même temps que le précédent, tôt après la bataille de Carkémis. La conquête de l'Egypte, que Jérémie prédit comme la conséquence de la défaite de l'armée égyptienne, n'a eu lieu que 33 ans plus tard, en 572.

Cette prophétie a deux strophes : la menace, versets 14 et 19, et l'exécution, versets 20 à 26 ; sur verset 27 et suivants, voir notes.

Ceux qui, comme les Égyptiens, ont empiété sur leurs voisins, seront à leur tour envahis. L’Égypte était maintenant comme une jeune génisse, non accoutumée au joug de la soumission ; mais la destruction allait survenir du nord : les Chaldéens était sur le point de surgir pour la conquérir.

Le réconfort et la paix furent annoncés aux enfants d’Israël, afin de les encourager lorsque les jugements divins frapperaient les nations dans lesquelles ils se trouvaient. L’Éternel allait être avec Son peuple, et le corriger de son péché ; Il allait le punir, sans toutefois le détruire définitivement.

      1 The burden of Egypt: "Behold, Yahweh rides on a swift cloud, and comes to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence; and the heart of Egypt will melt in its midst.
      2 I will stir up the Egyptians against the Egyptians, and they will fight everyone against his brother, and everyone against his neighbor; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
      3 The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst. I will destroy its counsel. They will seek the idols, the charmers, those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards.
      4 I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel lord. A fierce king will rule over them," says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.

      Esaïe 29

      1 Woe to Ariel! Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts come around;
      2 then I will distress Ariel, and there will be mourning and lamentation. She shall be to me as an altar hearth .
      3 I will encamp against you all around you, and will lay siege against you with posted troops. I will raise siege works against you.
      4 You will be brought down, and will speak out of the ground. Your speech will mumble out of the dust. Your voice will be as of one who has a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and your speech will whisper out of the dust.

The multitude of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion will be like that.
      9 Pause and wonder! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
      10 For Yahweh has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, the prophets; and he has covered your heads, the seers.
      11 All vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is educated, saying, "Read this, please"; and he says, "I can't, for it is sealed:"
      12 and the book is delivered to one who is not educated, saying, "Read this, please"; and he says, "I can't read."
      13 The Lord said, "Because this people draws near with their mouth and with their lips to honor me, but they have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which has been taught;
      14 therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the understanding of their prudent men will be hidden."
      15 Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from Yahweh, and whose works are in the dark, and who say, "Who sees us?" and "Who knows us?"
      16 You turn things upside down! Should the potter be thought to be like clay; that the thing made should say about him who made it, "He didn't make me"; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding?"
      17 Isn't it yet a very little while, and Lebanon will be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field will be regarded as a forest?
      18 In that day, the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see out of obscurity and out of darkness.
      19 The humble also will increase their joy in Yahweh, and the poor among men will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
      20 For the ruthless is brought to nothing, and the scoffer ceases, and all those who are alert to do evil are cut off--
      21 who cause a person to be indicted by a word, and lay a snare for the arbiter in the gate, and who deprive the innocent of justice with false testimony.
      22 Therefore thus says Yahweh, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: "Jacob shall no longer be ashamed, neither shall his face grow pale.
      23 But when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they will sanctify my name. Yes, they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
      24 They also who err in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumble will receive instruction."

      Jérémie 43

      10 and tell them, Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne on these stones that I have hidden; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.
      11 He shall come, and shall strike the land of Egypt; such as are for death shall be put to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword.
      12 I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captive: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment; and he shall go forth from there in peace.
      13 He shall also break the pillars of Beth Shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of Egypt shall he burn with fire.

      Jérémie 44

      30 Thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy, and sought his life.

      Jérémie 46

      13 The word that Yahweh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt.
