Observez la peine et le soin que prennent les méchants pour dissimuler leurs actes frauduleux ; la négligence dans la pratique du bien, ou l'accoutumance à la paresse, devraient nous rendre honteux. Observez les contraintes subies par ceux qui veulent satisfaire les convoitises de la chair : ils se mettent en peine pour accomplir des actes douteux et ensuite pour dissimuler ce qui finalement ira vers la mort et l'enfer. Les moindres souffrances mortifient et crucifient la chair durant la vie. La honte est arrivée avec le péché, elle lui sera associée éternellement, jusqu'à sa fin. Remarquez à quel point les pécheurs sont misérables ; ils sont exposés à des frayeurs continuelles : observez leur folie ; ils ont peur d'être vus des hommes, mais ne se soucient guère de l'œil de Dieu qui les observe en permanence. Ils n'ont pas peur de commettre des actes qu'ils désirent garder secrets.
