Après avoir rompu la relation entre le peuple et son Dieu, le prophète rompt celle qui unissait les deux grandes parties du peuple. Que l'on place le prophète avant ou après la captivité, on a peine à comprendre le sens de ces mots. Dans le premier cas, la fraternité entre les deux royaumes n'était-elle pas rompue depuis le jour de leur séparation sous Roboam, lorsque les dix tribus du nord avaient abandonné la houlette des rois de Juda pour se placer sous le sceptre d'autres dynasties ? Dans le second cas, on se demande si une partie assez considérable du peuple des dix tribus était revenue dans la patrie pour qu'il pût être question d'une rupture entre elle et ceux qui étaient rentrés de Juda (voir plus bas l'application de la scène).
