Il me fit voir. Le sujet ne peut être que l'ange interprète, intermédiaire entre le prophète et la vision soit pour lui montrer, soit pour lui expliquer celle-ci (comparez 4.1).

L'ange de l'Eternel. Il ne représente pas ici le peuple, en tant qu'intercesseur, comme au chapitre 1, mais Dieu lui-même, au nom duquel il reçoit l'adoration du peuple.

Satan : littéralement : l'Adversaire, car l'article dont ce mot est précédé montre qu'il n'est pas pris ici comme nom propre, mais comme qualificatif. Le verbe hébreu, d'où il vient, signifie s'opposer à, attaquer (Psaumes 38.21 ; 109.14) ; le substantif est employé souvent dans le sens usuel d'adverversaire. Avec l'article, il prend le sens de l'Adversaire proprement dit, dans le sens absolu du mot ; comparez Job 1.7 ; 2.2. L'Ecriture nous apprend qu'il y a non seulement des êtres d'une nature supérieure à l'homme mais qu'entre ces êtres il existe des rapports de subordination ; elle donne le nom d'archanges ou chefs d'anges à ceux qui occupent parmi eux la position la plus élevée, et comme une partie de ces êtres, dans l'épreuve que toute créature libre doit subir, a persisté dans l'obéissance et que l'autre s'est jetée dans la révolte, il doit, des deux parts, y avoir des chefs exerçant une influence plus ou moins étendue sur les anges qui se sont rattachés à eux. Satan apparaît comme le plus élevé des esprits révoltés. Jésus a reconnu son grand pouvoir non seulement sur les anges déchus, mais encore sur notre terre, en l'appelant le Prince de ce monde. Nous renvoyons à Genèse chapitre 3 et à Job chapitre 1, passages qui prouvent suffisamment que l'idée de Satan chez les Hébreux n'a pas été, empruntée par eux à la religion persane pendant l'exil, comme on l'a souvent prétendu. D'après cela, Satan est à la fois l'adversaire de Dieu, de son œuvre sur la terre, et de ceux qui sont soit les agents, soit les objets de celle-ci. C'est en cette qualité qu'il se présente ici dans le sanctuaire comme il le fait Job chapitres 1 et 2, dans le ciel même.

Se tenait à sa droite. L'accusateur se tenait, en général, à la droite de l'accusé (Psaumes 110.6).

Pour lui faire opposition : comparez Apocalypse 12.10, accusateur des élus. Il voulait empêcher le rétablissement du culte lévitique, condition de vie indispensable du peuple israélite, et pour cela il cherchait a montrer que Jéhosua n'était pas digne d'être investi de nouveau de la fonction sacerdotale. Or, la personne du souverain sacrificateur était le centre du sacerdoce tout entier.

L'ange, dans la vision de ce texte, montre à Zacharie, Josué le grand sacrificateur. Notre culpabilité et notre corruption nous accablent énormément lorsque nous nous présentons devant Dieu. Par les péchés que nous commettons, nous sommes passibles de mort, selon la Justice de Dieu ; notre triste nature nous rend odieux, vis-à-vis de la Sainteté divine. Israël, le peuple de Dieu était, par ses péchés, dans le même cas. Mais nous avons tous la possibilité d’être rachetés, justifiés et sanctifiés en Jésus-Christ, Celui qui est mort pour nous.

Dans ce texte, Josué, le « grand sacrificateur » est accusé, tel un criminel ; mais il est ensuite justifié. Quand nous cherchons à servir le Seigneur, ou défendre Sa cause ici-bas, nous devons nous attendre à être confrontés à Satan, qui par sa ruse et sa méchanceté, fera tout son possible pour lutter contre nous. Mais Satan est « contrôlé » par Celui qui l'a tenu en respect à maintes reprises.

Ceux qui appartiennent à Christ, Le trouveront toujours présent à leur côté, quand Satan semble vouloir les dominer. L’âme repentie et convertie au Seigneur, celle qui bénéficie de Sa Grâce abondante, ressemble, de manière imagée, à un tison arraché du feu : elle ne sera plus la proie de Satan.

Au verset trois, Josué porte des vêtements souillés ; il est ensuite purifié ; il représente les enfants d’Israël ; ils étaient tous impurs et souillés, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient purifiés et sanctifiés par le Nom du Seigneur Jésus et par l'Esprit de Dieu. En ce temps là, Israël était libéré de l'idolâtrie, mais il avait encore beaucoup de problèmes. Il était confronté à différents ennemis spirituels, plus dangereux que n'importe quelle nation environnante.

Christ exécrait la saleté des vêtements de Josué et pourtant il ne l'a pas repoussé pour autant. Dieu agit de la même manière, par Sa Grâce, envers ceux qu'Il choisit comme ses serviteurs. La culpabilité du péché est supprimée par Sa Miséricorde ; Elle pardonne le pécheur repentant et le pouvoir du péché est brisé par la Grâce qui régénère l’âme. De cette façon Christ purifie, par Son propre sang, ceux qu'Il a déclarés « rois et sacrificateurs du Très-Haut. » Ceux qui sont oints « prêtres spirituels » sont revêtus de l'habit sans tache de la droiture du Seigneur, et paraissent devant Dieu de cette façon, parés de « vêtements blancs » ainsi que de Son Esprit, qui sont pour lui de véritables ornements.

Au verset cinq, la justice des saints est comparée à un « turban pur », destiné à parer « l’épouse de l'Agneau, » Apocalypse 19:8. Josué reçoit de nouveau, par ce « turban, » les honneurs qu’il avait auparavant. Cette couronne de « grand sacrificateur » est posée sur sa tête.

Lorsque le Seigneur décide de restaurer et de raviver la piété chez l’homme, Il incite Ses prophètes et Ses serviteurs à prier pour le réveil.
