Grec : "C'est de lui que vous êtes," que vous émanez, que vous venez ; vous êtes nés de lui en Jésus-Christ, c'est-à-dire vous avez été créés de nouveau par l'œuvre de Jésus-Christ, et par votre communion avec lui. (Comparer Jean 8.47 ; Romains 11.36)

Grec : "Qui nous a été fait sagesse de la part de Dieu, justice et sanctification, et rédemption ;" de sorte que les trois derniers attributs ne sont que l'explication du premier, la sagesse. La sagesse qu'il nous fallait, celle que Dieu nous a donnée en JésusChrist, ce n'est point seulement une sagesse intellectuelle et spéculative, car nous n'avions pas seulement besoin d'être éclairés, mais surtout un remède qui guérit tous nos maux, parce que nous sommes des malades, des mourants.

De plus, l'apôtre ne dit pas simplement que Christ nous a révélé la sagesse, la justice, etc. ; mais qu'il l'est, lui ; et ainsi tout ce qui nous manque encore de ces biens spirituels, nous le trouverons certainement et jusqu'à la perfection en lui, si nous lui sommes unis par une foi vivante.

- La justice est distincte de la sanctification ; sous ce terme de justice, Paul entend la justification du pécheur devant Dieu par la foi au sacrifice expiatoire du Sauveur. (Romains 1.17, note ; Romains 8.32-34, notes.)

Mais la sanctification en est inséparable, c'est la purification graduelle du cœur et de la vie, dont la source est encore Christ, parce qu'elle n'a lieu que par la communion intime et vivante que la foi établit et maintient entre lui et notre âme.

La rédemption, qui, d'ordinaire, signifie le rachat de l'âme, sa délivrance de l'esclavage du péché et de la condamnation, indique ici (car il ne faut pas y voir un simple synonyme de la justification) la délivrance finale et parfaite de tout mal, laquelle n'aura lieu qu'après la résurrection, dont Christ encore est le principe et le garant. C'est ce que l'apôtre nomme ailleurs (Romains 8.23) "La rédemption de notre corps."
