L'apôtre raisonne ici a fortiori, du moindre au plus grand : si déjà chez le peuple de Dieu la participation au repas du sacrifice était telle que chacun s'en appropriait ainsi l'efficace, et avait communion avec l'autel, combien plus grande est la vertu du sacrifice de Christ en tous ceux qui le reçoivent dans la cène !

L'autel, par où l'apôtre entend l'institution du sacrifice juif, est une idée infiniment plus vague, moins réelle que Christ se communiquant aux siens.

- Cette expression : l'Israël selon la chair (Romains 9.3) oppose l'ancien peuple de Dieu au nouveau, aux chrétiens.
