1 Corinthiens 13.2

Les dons de prophétie, de science et de foi, (1Corinthiens 12.8-10, note) sans la charité, ne trouvent pas grâce aux veux de l'apôtre, non plus que le don des langues.

"Il paraît impossible de posséder ces dons, et cela au plus haut degré (toute la connaissance, toute la foi), sans la charité. Dirons-nous que l'apôtre a précisément voulu supposer l'impossible, afin de relever d'autant plus la valeur de la charité ? Les termes de l'original sont contraires à cette interprétation (Tous les verbes sont à un temps positif avec quand ou si, et non au conditionnel, comme nos versions sont forcées de les rendre.) Nous devons plutôt avouer que, bien que contre nature, une telle séparation de ce qui paraît inséparable n'est que trop possible. Le péché a jeté dans l'homme un tel désaccord, qu'il peut s'établir un complet divorce entre la tête et le cœur, de sorte qu'alors la force divine se maintient et se manifeste dans l'intelligence et même dans la volonté, tandis que l'inclination la plus intime du cœur s'est déjà détournée de lui, et ne puise plus l'amour à sa vraie source. C'est cette triste expérience que l'apôtre dépeint avec de vives couleurs, afin de mettre au jour la nature de la charité, qui donne seule à tous les faits religieux la vérité, la vie, l'harmonie." Balaam est un exemple frappant de la prophétie sans la charité. (Nombres 22) Quant à la connaissance sans la charité, voir les remarquables paroles de l'apôtre, 1Corinthiens 8.1,3. La foi ici (comme 1Corinthiens 12.9) n'est pas celle qui est imputée à justice, (Romains 4.5 et suivants) qui nous unit au Sauveur, et nous rend participants de Christ tout entier ; car une telle foi est inséparable de la charité.

Il s'agit ici d'un don (charisme), comme celui des langues ou des miracles, et cette foi, quoiqu'elle ne soit pas absolument différente de l'autre, du moins dans son principe, ne saisit guère comme son objet que la toute-puissance de Dieu, dont elle s'empare, et, par elle, se rend possible l'impossible, jusqu'à transporter les montagnes. (Comparer Matthieu 17.20)

Ceci trouvait surtout son application dans l'état de l'Eglise de Corinthe, au milieu de la fermentation des dons extraordinaires, où l'humain se mêlait d'une manière étrange au divin. Mais de tout temps une foi très forte peut exister sans la charité, témoin le fanatique qui persécute avec sincérité, ou qui devient lui-même martyr de son erreur.
