Le texte reçu porte : "et serviteur de Dieu, et notre compagnon d'œuvre." Outre cette variante, il s'en trouve un grand nombre d'autres dans les divers manuscrits, mais qui ne sont que des corrections provenant de la répugnance qu'inspirait ce beau titre de coopérateur de Dieu, ouvrier avec Dieu, terme qui n'est pourtant pas étranger à l'apôtre. (1Corinthiens 3.9)

C'est Dieu qui travaille dans l'Evangile, dans la prédication de cette bonne nouvelle, et ceux qui l'annoncent fidèlement sont ouvriers avec lui, ou ses coopérateurs. Paul accumule au sujet de Timothée les épithètes les plus affectueuses et les plus honorables, afin de donner d'autant plus de poids aux paroles d'encouragement que les Thessaloniciens avaient entendues de ce fidèle évangéliste.
