Dieu ne peut pas tolérer que les Siens perdurent à vivre dans le péché. Par cette parabole, Nathan montra à David, la conduite que ce dernier devait tenir, suite à son crime. Quand on adresse des reproches à quelqu'un, il faut être relativement prudent. Nathan resta courtois dans sa démarche. Il annonça clairement à David : « Tu es cet homme » ! Dieu montre bien à quel point Il déteste le péché, même quand il est commis par Son peuple ; quel que soit l'endroit où Il constate l'iniquité, Il ne le laisse pas son auteur impuni. David ne dit pas un mot pour tenter de se disculper ni pour faire la lumière sur son péché : il accepta le verdict du prophète. Quand David s'est écrié : « J'ai péché », Nathan comprit que le roi se repentait vraiment, il lui a assuré que son iniquité était pardonnée par l'Éternel et qu'il ne mourrait pas. Il signifiait par là, qu'il ne mourrait pas pour l'éternité, ni ne serait évincé de la présence divine, comme cela aurait pu être le cas si David avait masqué son péché. Bien que le roi soit châtié par l'Éternel, il reçut la promesse indirecte de ne pas être condamné par le monde. Les péchés de ceux qui professent leur piété et qui témoignent de leur relation avec le Seigneur, sont gravissimes, car ils fournissent aux ennemis de Dieu et de la religion, un motif de reproche et de blasphème contre le ciel.

Le cas mentionné dans ce passage, illustre clairement que malgré le pardon obtenu par David, l'Éternel corrigera de Sa verge Son serviteur, pour l'iniquité qu'il a commise. Pour un plaisir bien éphémère, suite logique d'une vile convoitise, David dut supporter pendant de nombreuses années, une détresse extrême.

      20 "He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
      21 The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
      22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe, and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.
      23 Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat, and celebrate;
