Il ne s'agit pas seulement de faux miracles, de récits légendaires et apocryphes jetés à la superstition de la multitude ignorante ; mais encore d'actes réels de puissance, de signes, de prodiges accomplis par l'efficace de Satan. (Comparer Matthieu 24.24)

Le mensonge consiste précisément en ce que, tandis que ces signes donnent au méchant l'autorité d'un envoyé de Dieu, ils procèdent du prince des ténèbres, et contribuent à plonger ceux qu'ils séduisent plus profondément encore dans l'abîme d'erreur où ils étaient déjà. (versets 10,11)
