L'apôtre vient d'employer ce mot de dépôt pour désigner sa foi, son salut éternel, qu'il a confié à son Dieu ; (2Timothée 1.12) maintenant il nomme ainsi le précieux trésor de la saine doctrine (2Timothée 1.13) transmis à Timothée, et que celui-ci doit garder.

Le sens est-il différent ? Nullement. La foi, qui renferme la vie et le salut, a toujours deux éléments inséparables : objectivement, la vérité divine qui en est l'objet, et subjectivement cette confiance du cœur qui en est l'essence même.

Or, ces deux éléments sont dans la pensée de l'apôtre, dans les trois passages où il emploie ce terme de dépôt. Et si, d'une part, Dieu est fidèle pour nous conserver ce que nous lui confions, (2Timothée 1.12) il veut que nous le soyons aussi pour garder jusqu'à la fin ce qu'il nous confie. Mais, afin de montrer à son disciple quelle est la source et le garant de la fidélité qu'il lui demande, il s'empresse d'ajouter : par le Saint-Esprit qui habite en nous, et qui rend vivant, en nous l'appropriant, le dépôt de la saine doctrine.
