La repentance, changement complet de disposition morale (Matthieu 3.2, 1re note) a pour effet la conversion, c'est-à-dire le retour vers Dieu qui est la source du pardon et de la vie éternelle.

Aussi le fruit de cette transformation intérieure de l'homme est-il que ses péchés sont, non seulement pardonnés, mais effacés annulés, anéantis.

L'image est prise d'un écrit, d'un compte, qu'on biffe pour lui ôter toute valeur. (Colossiens 2.14 ; Psaumes 51.3,11,Esaïe 43.25 ; 44.22) Cette pensée répond à un profond besoin de la conscience humaine.
