16 à 23 Conclusion de l'enseignement qui précède : la vraie liberté et la fausse sainteté.

Par ces mots l'apôtre, après avoir exposé sa doctrine de la personne de Christ et de son œuvre, (versets 9-15) revient à 1'exhortation directe, commencée à. verset 8, contre les erreurs qui menaçaient d'envahir l'Eglise de Colosses. Il conclut (donc) du fait que la loi a été abolie par la croix de Christ (verset 14) et que nous avons tout pleinement en lui, (verset 10) que personne ne doit voir dans l'observation de préceptes et de règles ascétiques la marque de la piété et de la vie chrétienne. (versets 16-21)

Quant à la nature des erreurs que Paul combat, les versets suivants ne la déterminent pas clairement, parce que cela n'était pas nécessaire pour des lecteurs qui les connaissaient très bien. Il est évident, toutefois, que Paul a en vue des docteurs judaïsants, qui unissaient un faux spiritualisme à une légalité servile, également contraires à la vérité et à la liberté chrétiennes. (Voir les notes qui suivent, et comparez verset 8, note, ainsi que 1'introduction à cette épître.)

Qu'il s'agisse ici des prescriptions mosaïques, c'est ce que montre évidemment verset 17. Mais le but des faux docteurs n'était pas, comme précédemment chez les Galates et ailleurs, d'imposer la loi de Moïse aux chrétiens d'origine païenne, comme une condition de leur salut ; ils prétendaient enseigner une sainteté supérieure qui consistait dans l'observance de certains préceptes et il paraît qu'ils ne s'en tenaient pas même aux dispositions légales de l'Ancien Testament ; car, tandis que la loi renfermait des directions sur les aliments (Lévitique 7.10 et suivants ; Lévitique 11.1 et suivants), on n'y trouve point de règles relatives aux boissons, si ce n'est dans le vœu du naziréat. (Nombres 6.3)

C'était donc à quelque système juif ou païen, à tendance ascétique et dualiste, que les faux docteurs empruntaient leurs idées à cet égard. Quelques interprètes pensent à la secte des Esséniens, qui vivaient retirés du monde dans des couvents au bord de la mer Morte. Mais il n'est nullement prouvé que leur influence se soit étendue jusqu'en Asie Mineure. Quoi qu'il en soit, l'apôtre rejette, comme contraires à la liberté évangélique, ces règles humaines qui devaient nécessairement ramener les âmes sous le joug de la légalité ou les entretenir dans une spiritualité trompeuse. (Comparer 1Timothée 4.3 ; Hébreux 13.9) Paul traite ailleurs (Romains 14) la même question à un point de vue tout différent.

L'apôtre désigne trois espèces des fêtes juives : d'abord, les grandes solennités de Pâques, de Pentecôte et des Tabernacles ; puis les fêtes mensuelles (nouvelle lune, Nombres 28.11-15), et enfin les sabbats ordinaires. (Comparer Romains 14.5,6 ; Galates 4.10)

S'il s'agit ici de la simple observation des sabbats ordinaires, l'apôtre la rangeait au nombre de ces institutions judaïques à l'égard desquelles le chrétien est entièrement libre. Telle est l'opinion la plus généralement admise par les interprètes modernes, même par des hommes pleins de foi, Gerlach, Olshausen, Neander.

Calvin lui-même écrit dans son commentaire sur ce passage : "Mais dira quelqu'un, nous retenons encore quelque observation de jours. Je réponds, que nous ne gardons point les jours, comme s'il y avait quelque religion ou sainteté des jours de fête, ou comme s'il n'était loisible de travailler en eux : mais qu'on a égard à la police, et à l'ordre, et non pas aux jours."

Il est certain que le sabbat juif ne peut subsister avec l'Evangile et la liberté chrétienne. Comme tous les moyens de grâce, l'institution divine et permanente d'un jour de repos est pour le chrétien un privilège et non une obligation légale.
