Nébucadnetsar son père. Belsatsar n'était pas fils de Nébucadnetsar, mais bien de Naboned, qui lui-même n'était pas fils de Nébucadnetsar, mais un Babylonien que les grands du royaume avaient élevé sur le trône. Si Nébucadnetsar, fondateur de la puissance de Babylone, est appelé ici père de Belsatsar, c'est dans le même sens que, dans les inscriptions assyriennes, Jéhu, roi d'Israël, est appelé fils de Omri, fondateur de Samarie, tandis qu'en réalité il était fils de Josaphat (2Rois 9.2). Ce titre de père, donné à Nébucadnetsar, revient tour à tour dans la bouche de l'auteur du récit (verset 2), de la mère du roi (verset 11), de Belsatsar (verset 13) et de Daniel (verset 18), et sert à faire ressortir le lien étroit de solidarité qui unit le premier grand monarque de Babylone et le dernier. Il se peut fort bien du reste que Naboned eût pris la précaution, fréquente chez les usurpateurs, d'épouser une personne du sang royal, par exemple une fille de Nébucadnetsar afin d'affermir sa dynastie. Ce qui confirme cette supposition, c'est que, d'après les inscriptions, un fils puîné de Naboned s'appelait Nébucadnetsar. Belsatsar aurait été ainsi le petit-fils du grand monarque. Les exemples du mot père, employé pour désigner un ancêtre, sont fréquents dans la Bible ; ainsi Genèse 28.13.

Ses femmes et ses concubines. Les Babyloniens, contrairement à l'usage des Perses et d'autres nations orientales, admettaient les femmes à leurs banquets, qui devinrent proverbiaux par leur licence.
