Deutéronome 31.9

וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב מֹשֶׁה֮ אֶת־הַתּוֹרָ֣ה הַזֹּאת֒ וַֽיִּתְּנָ֗הּ אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ בְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֔י הַנֹּ֣שְׂאִ֔ים אֶת־אֲר֖וֹן בְּרִ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְאֶל־כָּל־זִקְנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
Moses wrote this law, and delivered it to the priests the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel.

Cette loi. Ce terme désigne sans doute les discours qu'il vient de prononcer.

Sacrificateurs, fils de Lévi : comparez 17.9.

Qui portaient l'arche. Ce détail est rappelé ici en relation avec le dépôt de la loi à côté de l'arche (verset 26).

Et à tous les Anciens. Si c'était aux Lévites à garder la loi, c'était aux Anciens à veiller à son exécution au sein du peuple.

Bien que nous lisions la Parole de Dieu en privé, ne pensons pas qu'il soit inutile de l'entendre lire en public. La lecture solennelle de la loi devait être effectuée l'année de « relâche ». Cette année particulière est un peu une image de l'évangile, que l'on peut nommer, « l'année propice du Seigneur » ; notre pardon reçu et notre liberté en Christ, nous engagent à garder Ses commandements.

La loi devait être lue, en Israël, devant toute personne : les hommes, les femmes, les enfants et les étrangers. Dieu désirait en effet, que tout le peuple connaisse Sa Parole. Cette règle nous concerne également, la Bible doit être lue devant toute l'assemblée. Quand on sait tout le mal que certaines personnes se sont donné pour obtenir, ne serait-ce qu'un fragment de la Bible, alors qu'une copie entière était introuvable et qu'il était interdit de la posséder, nous ne pouvons qu'être reconnaissants pour les milliers d'exemplaires aujourd'hui disponibles parmi nous !

Par cette lecture, le peuple était à même de mieux comprendre les différents situations qu'Israël avait traversées, d'âge en âge. Mais le cœur de l'homme est si négligent, qu'il peut, hélas, ne pas trouver le temps nécessaire, pour se consacrer à la connaissance des préceptes divins et à l'adoration du Seigneur.
