C'est qu'il y a tel homme à qui Dieu donne des richesses, des biens, et des honneurs, en sorte qu'il ne manque rien à son âme de tout ce qu'il saurait souhaiter ; mais Dieu ne l'en fait pas le maître pour en manger, et un étranger le mangera ; cela est une vanité, et un mal fâcheux.

Voilà un homme... On croit entendre l'Ecclésiaste exposer son thème. On assiste à la reprise de la conversation. Il a commencé gravement au verset 1. Maintenant il s'anime : Tenez, par exemple ! Voilà un homme...

Mais Dieu ne lui permet pas d'en jouir, soit qu'il meure avant le temps, soit qu'une maladie cruelle vienne empoisonner sa vie, Vous voyez bien qu'il faut compter avec Dieu !

C'est un étranger qui en jouit : après lui, ou bien sous ses yeux (2.18-19).
