Grec : "Selon le siècle de ce monde."

On trouve dans l'Ecriture séparément chacun de ces deux mots, (1Corinthiens 3.18,19) à peu près synonymes, pour exprimer cet ensemble de principes, de maximes, de conduite, de péché, qui caractérise la vie des hommes inconvertis ; mais c'est ici le seul passage où ils soient réunis. Ils le sont sans doute pour donner plus d'énergie et d'étendue à la pensée.

Le siècle exprime peut-être surtout l'ensemble des idées, des tendances qui ont cours à chaque époque ; le monde en est la manifestation pratique, extérieure. Les paroles qui suivent (Ephésiens 2.2,3) développent, en traits frappants, ce que l'apôtre entend par le siècle de ce monde, expression un peu vaguement rendue, dans nos versions, par "le train de ce monde." Luther et la Bible anglaise traduisent : "le cours de ce monde."

C'est par ces mots que l'apôtre désigne Satan, celui qui règne sur "le siècle de ce monde" Satan exerce une domination sur le royaume des ténèbres, il en est le prince. (Matthieu 12.24 ; Jean 12.31 ; 2Corinthiens 4.4 ; Colossiens 1.13)

La puissance de l'air est une désignation de l'empire du démon, qui ne se trouve qu'ici et qui a beaucoup occupé les interprètes. Ce qu'il y a de plus probable, c'est que l'apôtre veut indiquer par là que Satan et les anges déchus étant, par leur nature, spirituels, ne sont pas, comme les hommes, liés à cette terre, mais exercent leur domination dans des régions supérieures, que l'apôtre appelle ailleurs "les lieux célestes." (Ephésiens 6.12)

Mais le côté le plus clairement pratique des enseignements de l'apôtre sur ce point difficile, c'est que le démon qui régit la puissance de l'air commande aussi à l'esprit qui agit maintenant (il agissait aussi en vous autrefois) avec efficace dans les fils de la révolte, de la désobéissance à Dieu. (Colossiens 3.6)

Le verset suivant dit assez quels sont les moyens dont il se sert. Des passages comme celui-ci (et ils abondent dans l'Ecriture) nous montrent l'importance de la doctrine mystérieuse du démon. On ne connaît le mal, dans sa nature profonde et dans toutes ses conséquences, que lorsqu'on le considère non comme isolé dans le monde moral, comme un vide, un manque relativement au bien ; non pas même uniquement comme l'effet de la corruption de la nature humaine ; mais dans son inévitable connexion avec cette puissance des ténèbres, dont la révélation nous parle sans cesse, du commencement de la Genèse jusqu'à la fin de l'Apocalypse.

Chaque péché, chaque passion mauvaise de son cœur, met l'homme pécheur en communion avec ce règne ténébreux d'êtres qui haïssent Dieu et qui travaillent à la ruine de son empire dans les âmes et dans le monde ; comme aussi chaque acte d'obéissance, chaque mouvement de vrai amour met l'homme en communion avec le règne de Dieu, avec tout ce qui l'aime et le glorifie, soit sur la terre, soit dans le ciel. (Comparer Actes 26.18)

Ce lien fatal qui rend celui qui fait le mal esclave du prince des ténèbres peut devenir pour lui la cause d'une inévitable ruine, comme on le voit clairement, par exemple, dans l'histoire morale d'un Judas. (Voir Jean 13.2,27)

C'est ce que Paul exprime ici par cette "action efficace" du prince de ce monde dans les rebelles. Mais le même apôtre montre aux chrétiens leur pleine délivrance de cette puissance dans l'œuvre de la rédemption, dont l'influence victorieuse s'étend jusque dans les sombres profondeurs de l'empire du mal. (Colossiens 1.13)
