C'est sous des couleurs empruntées au présent que l'avenir le plus lointain s'offre à l'intuition du prophète : il voit aux derniers jours Israël dominer sur tous ses ennemis. Comparez 14.2 et le tableau Michée 5.4-9.

Ils voleront. A l'improviste, comme l'oiseau qui fond sur sa proie, ils se précipiteront du haut de leurs montagnes sur les Philistins (l'épaule, terme employé dans l'Ancien Testament pour désigner le bas-pays qui s'abaisse graduellement vers la mer).

A l'Occident. Comparez 2.6 ; 9.11. Prophétie d'Esaïe contre les Philistins : 14.28-32.

Les fils de l'Orient (Juges 6.3, etc.) sont les tribus nomades du désert, à l'est du Jourdain. Ces Arabes, pillards aujourd'hui comme alors, seront pillés à leur tour.

Edom, Moab, Ammon, habitaient à l'est et au sud de la mer Morte. Voir Deutéronome 2.8-9,18-19. Prophéties contre Edom et Moab dans le livre d'Esaïe : Esaïe 15.1-16.14 ; 21.11 ; 25.10 ; 34.1-17 ; 63.1.

Ces peuples, qu'on trouve également réunis dans le discours menaçant d'Amos (chapitres 1 et 2), étaient les ennemis acharnés et héréditaires d'Israël ; ils avaient tous appartenu à l'empire de David (2Samuel 8.11-13) ; cet empire est le type de celui du Messie.
