World English Bible Yahweh has mixed a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in all of its works, like a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

L'Egypte, abusée par ses chefs, est comparée a un homme ivre qui trébuche et reste gisant dans ce qu'il a vomi (Jérémie 48.26 emploie la même image en parlant de Moab). Tout le monde perd la tête : cet effarement général est un jugement de Dieu. Comparez 29.9-10. L'histoire ancienne et moderne offre plusieurs exemples d'un pareil état de choses, où les individus sont emportés par la masse, poussée elle-même par une fatalité supérieure.
