Le jugement des Assyriens est certain ; car la place où leurs cadavres doivent être consumés est déjà préparée.

Thopheth. C'est le nom donné à un endroit de la vallée de Hinnom, où l'on avait offert, au temps d'Achaz, des sacrifices humains à Moloch (2Rois 23.10 ; 2Chroniques 28.3) ; plus tard on fit de ce lieu une voirie (Jérémie 7.31 et suivants). Pour dépeindre la destruction des Assyriens, Esaïe représente que leurs cadavres y seront brûlés.

Pour le roi : pour le roi d'Assyrie.

Profond et large : un bûcher digne d'un roi et où il y aura place pour beaucoup de corps morts.

Un torrent de soufre, c'est-à-dire du soufre enflammé, qui allumera le bûcher déjà préparé. Allusion peut-être à la pluie de feu et de soufre qui embrasa Sodome et Gomorrhe (Genèse 19.24); comparez versets 27 et 28.
