Joug, verge, bâton. Le peuple est comparé à une bête de somme : le joug qui pèse sur elle, la verge dont on le frappe, l'aiguillon avec lequel on l'excite, tout cela est brisé.

Exacteur : le mot hébreu désigne proprement le piqueur, l'ânier, qui aiguillonne sa bête. La servitude d'Egypte est caractérisée par les mêmes termes (Exode 3.7 ; 5.6). Ici l'exacteur est l'Assyrien (10.5,24 ; comparez Michée 5.5-6), qui est dans la pensée d'Esaïe, le représentant de tous les ennemis du règne de Dieu (Luc 1.69-71).

La journée de Madian. Comparez 10.26. La victoire de Gédéon sur les Madianites (Juges 7.1-25) est choisie comme type de la délivrance messianique parce que la déroute de l'ennemi fut aussi complète que possible et que ce triomphe fut dû, plus visiblement qu'aucun autre, à l'intervention de Dieu (Juges 7.2,7). Remarquez qu'il fut remporté sur les confins de la Galilée et par les tribus qui habitaient cette contrée (Juges 6.35 ; 7.23).
