Naissance et enfance de Moïse
1 A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.2 The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.3 When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank.4 His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.5 Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her handmaid to get it.6 She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children."7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?"8 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." The maiden went and called the child's mother.9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." The woman took the child, and nursed it.10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. 11 It happened in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.12 He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.13 He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow?"14 He said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid, and said, "Surely this thing is known."15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.17 The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.18 When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, "How is it that you have returned so early today?"19 They said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock."20 He said to his daughters, "Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread."21 Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.22 She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land."Dieu choisit Moïse pour libérer Israël
23 It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.24 God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.25 God saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them. -

1 Et un homme de la maison de Lévi alla, et prit une fille de Lévi ; et la femme conçut,2 et enfanta un fils ; et elle vit qu'il était beau ; et elle le cacha trois mois.3 Et comme elle ne pouvait plus le cacher, elle prit pour lui un coffret de joncs, et l'enduisit de bitume et de poix, et mit dedans l'enfant, et le posa parmi les roseaux sur le bord du fleuve.4 Et sa soeur se tint à distance pour savoir ce qu'on lui ferait.5 Et la fille du Pharaon descendit au fleuve pour se laver, et ses jeunes filles se promenaient sur le bord du fleuve ; et elle vit le coffret au milieu des roseaux, et elle envoya sa servante, qui le prit ;6 et elle l'ouvrit, et vit l'enfant ; et voici, c'était un petit garçon qui pleurait. Et elle eut compassion de lui, et dit : c'est un des enfants des Hébreux.7 Et sa soeur dit à la fille du Pharaon : Irai-je et appellerai-je auprès de toi une nourrice d'entre les Hébreues, et elle t'allaitera l'enfant ?8 Et la fille du Pharaon lui dit : Va. Et la jeune fille alla, et appela la mère de l'enfant.9 Et la fille du Pharaon lui dit : Emporte cet enfant, et allaite-le pour moi, et je te donnerai ton salaire. Et la femme prit l'enfant, et l'allaita.10 Et l'enfant grandit, et elle l'amena à la fille du Pharaon, et il fut son fils ; et elle appela son nom Moïse, et dit : Car je l'ai tiré des eaux.Moïse doit fuir au pays de Madian
11 Et il arriva, en ces jours-là, que Moïse, étant devenu grand, sortit vers ses frères ; et il vit leurs fardeaux. Et il vit un homme égyptien qui frappait un Hébreu d'entre ses frères ;12 et il regarda çà et là, et vit qu'il n'y avait personne, et il frappa l'Egyptien, et le cacha dans le sable.13 Et il sortit le second jour ; et voici, deux hommes hébreux se querellaient. Et il dit au coupable : Pourquoi frappes-tu ton compagnon ?14 Et il dit : Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous ? Est-ce que tu veux me tuer, comme tu as tué l'Egyptien ? Et Moïse eut peur, et dit : Certainement le fait est connu.15 Et le Pharaon apprit la chose, et chercha à tuer Moïse ; mais Moïse s'enfuit de devant le Pharaon, et habita dans le pays de Madian.16 Et il s'assit près d'un puits ; or le sacrificateur de Madian avait sept filles ; et elles vinrent, et puisèrent, et emplirent les auges pour abreuver le bétail de leur père.17 Et les bergers vinrent, et les chassèrent ; et Moïse se leva, et les secourut, et abreuva leur bétail.18 Et elles vinrent vers Rehuel, leur père ; et il dit : Pourquoi êtes-vous venues si tôt aujourd'hui ?19 Et elles dirent : Un homme égyptien nous a délivrées de la main des bergers, et il a aussi puisé abondamment pour nous, et a abreuvé le bétail.20 Et il dit à ses filles : Où est-il donc ? Pourquoi avez-vous laissé là cet homme ? Appelez-le, et qu'il mange du pain.21 Et Moïse consentit à habiter avec lui ; et il donna Séphora, sa fille, à Moïse.22 Et elle enfanta un fils, et il appela son nom Guershom ; car, dit-il, j'ai séjourné dans un pays étranger.Dieu choisit Moïse pour libérer Israël
23 Et il arriva en ces jours, qui furent nombreux, que le roi d'Égypte mourut ; et les fils d'Israël soupirèrent à cause de leur service, et ils crièrent ; et leur cri monta vers Dieu à cause de leur service.24 Et Dieu ouït leur gémissement, et Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, avec Isaac, et avec Jacob.25 Et Dieu regarda les fils d'Israël, et Dieu connut leur état. -

1 Un homme de la tribu de Lévi se marie avec une femme de la même tribu.2 Cette femme devient enceinte et elle met au monde un garçon. Elle voit que l’enfant est beau. Alors elle le cache pendant trois mois.3 Mais elle ne peut pas le cacher plus longtemps. Elle prend donc un panier fait avec des tiges de papyrus. Elle le recouvre avec du goudron et de la colle. Puis elle met le bébé dedans et va poser le panier parmi les roseaux, au bord du Nil.4 La sœur de l’enfant reste un peu plus loin pour voir ce qui se passera.5 Plus tard, la fille du roi d’Égypte descend vers le Nil pour se baigner. Pendant ce temps, les femmes qui sont avec elle se promènent le long du fleuve. La princesse aperçoit le panier au milieu des roseaux et elle envoie sa servante le prendre.6 Puis elle ouvre le panier et voit un petit garçon qui pleure. Elle a pitié de lui et dit : « C’est un petit Hébreu ! »7 La sœur de l’enfant demande à la princesse : « Est-ce que je dois aller chercher parmi les Hébreux une femme pour le nourrir ? Elle pourra allaiter l’enfant pour toi. »8 La princesse lui répond : « Va ! » Et la jeune fille va appeler la mère de l’enfant.9 La princesse dit à la femme : « Prends ce bébé ! Allaite-le pour moi, et je te paierai pour cela. » La femme prend le bébé et lui donne son lait.10 L’enfant grandit. Sa mère l’amène à la fille du roi d’Égypte. Celle-ci le prend pour fils. Elle dit : « Cet enfant, je l’ai tiré de l’eau, c’est pourquoi je vais l’appeler Moïse. »Moïse doit fuir au pays de Madian
11 Un jour, Moïse, devenu adulte, va trouver ses frères hébreux. Il voit les durs travaux qu’on leur impose. Il aperçoit aussi un Égyptien en train de frapper un de ses frères hébreux.12 Moïse regarde autour de lui et il ne voit personne. Alors il tue l’Égyptien et le cache dans le sable.13 Le jour suivant, Moïse revient de nouveau. Il trouve deux Hébreux qui se battent. Il demande à celui qui a tort : « Pourquoi est-ce que tu frappes ton frère ? »14 Celui-ci lui répond : « Qui t’a nommé chef pour nous juger ? Est-ce que tu as l’intention de me tuer, comme tu as tué l’Égyptien ? » Moïse se dit : « C’est sûr, les gens savent ce que j’ai fait ! », et il a peur.15 Le roi d’Égypte, lui aussi, apprend la chose et il cherche à faire mourir Moïse. Mais Moïse s’enfuit et il va habiter au pays de Madian. Un jour, il s’assoit près d’un puits.16 Sept jeunes filles viennent puiser de l’eau et remplir les abreuvoirs. Elles vont donner à boire aux moutons et aux chèvres de leur père, qui est prêtre de Madian.17 Mais des bergers arrivent et ils chassent les jeunes filles. Alors Moïse vient à leur secours et il donne à boire à leurs bêtes.18 Elles reviennent chez leur père, Réouel. Celui-ci leur demande : « Vous rentrez très tôt aujourd’hui. Pourquoi ? »19 Elles répondent : « Un Égyptien nous a protégées contre les bergers. Il a même puisé de l’eau pour nous et il a donné à boire aux bêtes. »20 Réouel dit à ses filles : « Où est cet homme ? Vous ne l’avez pas amené ici ! Pourquoi donc ? Allez le chercher pour qu’il mange avec nous ! »21 Moïse accepte d’habiter chez Réouel. Celui-ci lui donne sa fille Séfora pour femme.22 Séfora met au monde un fils. Alors Moïse dit : « Je vais l’appeler Guerchom, c’est-à-dire “Étranger-là”. En effet, je suis maintenant installé dans un pays étranger. »Dieu choisit Moïse pour libérer Israël
23 Longtemps après, le roi d’Égypte meurt. Les Israélites gémissent et crient du fond de leur esclavage, et leur appel monte vers Dieu.24 Dieu entend leur plainte et il se souvient de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.25 Il regarde les Israélites et comprend leur situation.

L'explication de ce nom donnée par Moïse ne se justifie pleinement qu'en égyptien, langue dans laquelle guer signifie (de même qu'en hébreu) habitant temporaire, hôte, et schemmo : terre étrangère.
Selon l'habitude des Hébreux, la forme du nom a été légèrement modifiée, afin de lui donner une étymologie et une terminaison hébraïques en le faisant provenir de garasch, bannir.
Moïse eut encore de Séphora un autre fils, qu'il nomma Eliézer (18.4).
