Ne devait-il pas suffire de dire aux Israélites : Le Dieu de vos pères ? Pourquoi supposer qu'ils demanderont son nom ? Il faut bien se rappeler que ce peuple avait vécu quatre siècles au milieu d'une nation idolâtre et qui lui était très supérieure en civilisation. N'ayant probablement aucun culte régulier, devenu dans la pratique idolâtre lui-même (comparez l'histoire du veau d'or ; Amos 5.26 ; Josué 24.14), il n'avait plus qu'un souvenir assez vague du Dieu qu'avaient adoré ses pères.
Comme le polythéisme n'avait pas régné chez ceux-ci, leur Dieu était pour eux la divinité en général, Elohim, sans nom particulier, tandis qu'en Egypte chaque dieu avait son nom déterminé et même plusieurs noms, selon ses attributs divers. Aussi un écrivain ancien appelle-t-il l'Egypte la patrie des noms des dieux. On comprend ainsi la question à laquelle s'attend Moïse de la part du peuple sur ce Dieu de leurs pères, au nom duquel il se présentera à eux. Quels sont ses attributs ? A quelles manifestations peuvent-ils s'attendre de sa part ? Par quels moyens soutiendra-t-il la lutte avec Pharaon et ses dieux ? Voilà tout ce que doit leur faire comprendre son nom, révélation de son être et de son pouvoir.
