Les deux aigles et la vigne
1 The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,2 Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;3 and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:4 he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it, and carried it to a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.5 He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow tree.6 It grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and its roots were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.7 There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.8 It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.9 Say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? and not by a strong arm or many people can it be raised from its roots.10 Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the beds where it grew.Explication de la parabole
11 Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,12 Say now to the rebellious house, Don't you know what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king, and its princes, and brought them to him to Babylon:13 and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;14 that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.15 But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape who does such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?16 As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.17 Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons.18 For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things; he shall not escape.19 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: As I live, surely my oath that he has despised, and my covenant that he has broken, I will even bring it on his own head.20 I will spread my net on him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.21 All his fugitives in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and you shall know that I, Yahweh, have spoken it.Promesses du Seigneur
22 Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain:23 in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of its branches shall they dwell.24 All the trees of the field shall know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it. -

1 Le SEIGNEUR m’a adressé sa parole. Il m’a dit :2 « Toi, l’homme, présente une devinette aux Israélites en leur racontant une histoire.3 Tu leur diras que moi, le Seigneur DIEU, je leur raconte ceci : C’est l’histoire du grand aigle aux larges ailes, aux longues plumes épaisses et de toutes couleurs. Cet oiseau vole jusqu’aux montagnes du Liban.4 Il casse la pointe d’un cèdre. Il arrache sa branche la plus haute. Il l’emporte dans un pays de commerçants et la place dans une ville de marchands.5 Il prend un autre plant du pays d’Israël et le met dans une pépinière. Il le plante près d’un fleuve abondant, comme un arbre qui aime l’eau.6 Ce plant grandit, il devient une vigne magnifique, qui court sur le sol. Ses branches grandissent en direction de l’aigle, et ses racines poussent sous ses ailes. Cette vigne donne sans cesse de nouvelles branches.7 Mais un deuxième grand aigle arrive. Il a de larges ailes et des plumes nombreuses. Alors la vigne dirige ses racines vers lui et tourne ses branches de son côté. Elle espère recevoir encore plus d’eau que dans le sol où elle est plantée.8 Pourtant, elle a été plantée dans une bonne terre, au bord d’un fleuve abondant. Elle peut donc produire des branches, porter des fruits et devenir une vigne magnifique.9 « Et moi, le Seigneur DIEU, je demande : Est-ce que cette vigne peut se développer ? Est-ce que le premier aigle ne va pas arracher ses racines, enlever ses fruits ? Est-ce qu’ensuite, ses nouvelles branches ne vont pas sécher ? Pour l’arracher de terre, il n’aura pas besoin de beaucoup de force ni de beaucoup de gens.10 La vigne a bien été plantée, mais elle ne pourra pas se développer. Quand le vent d’est soufflera sur elle, elle séchera complètement. Elle séchera sur la terre où elle devait pousser. »Explication de la parabole
11 Le SEIGNEUR m’a dit :12 « Demande à cette bande de révoltés s’ils ne comprennent pas ce que cette histoire veut dire. Rappelle-leur ceci : Le roi de Babylone est entré à Jérusalem, il a pris le roi et les chefs, il les a emmenés avec lui à Babylone.13 Ensuite, il a choisi quelqu’un de la famille royale. Il a signé un accord avec lui et lui a fait jurer de rester fidèle au roi de Babylone. Il a emmené les grands du pays14 pour que le royaume reste petit, qu’il ne puisse pas se développer et qu’il respecte fidèlement l’accord signé.15 Mais le nouveau roi s’est révolté contre le roi de Babylone. Il a envoyé des messagers en Égypte pour que ce pays lui donne des chevaux et beaucoup de soldats. Est-ce que celui qui a fait cela peut réussir ? Est-ce qu’il peut s’en sortir ? Non, il ne peut pas s’en sortir parce qu’il n’a pas respecté l’accord signé.16 « Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, je le déclare, moi, le Seigneur DIEU : Le roi d’Israël mourra dans le pays du roi de Babylone qui l’a placé sur le siège royal. En effet, il n’a pas tenu compte du serment qu’il avait fait, il n’a pas respecté l’accord passé. Ainsi, c’est à Babylone que le roi d’Israël mourra.17 Le roi d’Égypte ne pourra pas le défendre, même avec une grande armée et des troupes nombreuses. En effet, pendant la guerre, les Babyloniens bâtiront des murs d’attaque et ils creuseront des fossés pour tuer un grand nombre de gens.18 En ne tenant pas compte du serment qu’il avait fait, le roi d’Israël n’a pas respecté l’accord signé. Il a agi ainsi et pourtant il avait donné sa parole. Donc, il ne s’en sortira pas.19 « Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, voici ce que je déclare, moi, le Seigneur DIEU : Le roi d’Israël n’a pas tenu compte du serment qu’il avait fait devant moi. Il n’a pas respecté l’accord signé en mon nom. C’est pourquoi je le ferai payer pour cela.20 Je vais lui tendre un piège et le faire prisonnier. Je l’emmènerai à Babylone et, là-bas, je le ferai condamner parce qu’il n’a pas été fidèle envers moi.21 Ses meilleurs soldats seront tués à la guerre, et ceux qui resteront en vie partiront de tous côtés. Alors vous saurez que c’est moi, le SEIGNEUR, qui vous ai parlé. »Promesses du Seigneur
22 Voici les paroles du Seigneur DIEU : « Je prendrai moi-même une jeune branche à la pointe du cèdre, au bout des grandes branches. Et je la planterai sur une très haute montagne.23 Je la planterai sur une haute montagne d’Israël. Cette tige développera ses branches, elle produira des graines, elle deviendra un cèdre magnifique. Des oiseaux de toutes sortes feront leurs nids dans ses branches et ils se reposeront sous son ombre.24 Alors tous les arbres de la campagne sauront que le SEIGNEUR, c’est moi. Je diminue les arbres qui sont grands, je fais grandir les arbres qui sont petits. Je rends secs les arbres verts, je fais fleurir les arbres secs. Moi, le SEIGNEUR, j’ai parlé et je fais ce que je dis. » -

Un autre grand aigle. C'est le roi d'Egypte. Ezéchiel ne lui attribue pas, comme au précédent, un plumage bigarré ni une grande envergure ; car l'Egypte possédait un territoire moins vaste et peuplé de nations moins diverses que l'empire chaldéen.
Tendit ses racines vers lui : Sédécias fit un mauvais usage de ce qui lui restait de liberté (racines sous lui, verset 6) ; il rechercha l'alliance de Pharaon Hophra, qui régnait alors sur l'Egypte, Jérémie 44.30. Il y a un contraste intentionnel entre ses sarments (verset 6) et ses racines. Ostensiblement il était soumis au roi de Babylone ; mais en cachette il s'adressait à l'Egypte.
Pour qu'il l'arrosât : pour qu'il lui envoyât du secours contre Babylone.
