World English Bible I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

Purification et régénération du peuple.

Une aspersion d'eaux pures. Cette image est empruntée au culte israélite (comparez Nombres 19.17-19). La tache résultant d'un attouchement impur ne pouvait être nettoyée que par la lustration prescrite pour ce cas. C'est à ce fait que ont allusion Psaumes 51.9 ; Zacharie 13.1. L'eau pure est à la fois un emblème du pardon de la part de Dieu et de la rupture avec le mal de la part du pécheur, ainsi de la repentance et de la grâce. Jean-Baptiste avait probablement en vue cette parole, quand il instituait le baptême comme préparation du peuple au royaume de Dieu.

L'eau est l’emblème de la purification de notre âme, polluée par le péché. Mais l’eau ne peut faire plus, que d’ôter la souillure du corps.

L'eau semble, en général, être le signe spirituel de la sanctification du Saint-Esprit ; cependant, cette action est toujours associée à celle du sang réconciliateur de Christ. Quand l’Esprit, par la foi, sonde notre conscience, dans le but de purifier nos mauvaises actions, le sang de Jésus est toujours « appliqué » à notre âme, afin de l'épurer de la pollution du péché.

Tous ceux qui bénéficient de la « nouvelle alliance », ont un nouveau cœur et un nouvel esprit, ils marchent en nouveauté de vie ! Dieu désire transformer notre cœur de chair, en un cœur tendre, conforme à Sa sainte Volonté. La Grâce régénératrice opère un grand changement de l'âme, de « pierre morte » elle la transforme en « pierre vivante ». Dieu placera Son Esprit en nous, pour devenir un Maître, un Guide, Celui qui Sanctifie.

La promesse du bénéfice de la Grâce divine sert à nous préparer à accomplir notre devoir : dans ce but ceci devrait activer notre zèle !

Les interventions divines concourent à notre bien, elles s’adressent de tous temps à tous les véritables croyants !
