Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Strike with your hand, and stamp with your foot, and say, Alas! because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel; for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.

Frappe dans ta main et bats du pied : signes du regret et de la surprise. Le prophète doit exprimer par là le sentiment de douleur et d'étonnement qu'éprouve Dieu lui-même à la vue de la méchanceté opiniâtre de son peuple.

Il est de notre devoir spirituel, d’une part, d’être affecté par nos propres péchés et nos différentes épreuves, mais d’autre part d’éprouver de la compassion envers les impies, lorsqu’ils sont sujets aux calamités qui leur sont envoyées par le ciel.

Le péché n’est vraiment que désolation ; restons-donc vigilants à son encontre : évitons de le commettre ! Si nous connaissons la valeur des âmes, et le danger auquel les incroyants sont exposés, nous recommanderons alors à chaque pécheur à prendre refuge en Jésus, afin d’éviter la « colère à venir » ; une forte récompense céleste nous est alors réservée, pour tout le mépris ou l'opposition que nous pourrions rencontrer.
