15-20 Les descendants de Canaan

C'est, avec les Joktanides, la liste la plus détaillée qui nous soit donnée dans ce chapitre, ce qui montre que cette branche de la race chamitique était la mieux connue de l'auteur. Sidon et Heth désignent à la fois l'ancêtre et le peuple sorti de lui ; les neuf autres noms sont des dénominations de peuples.

Sidon vient d'une racine qui signifie pêcher. C'est le nom de la plus ancienne ville des Phéniciens qui primitivement se nommaient Sidoniens. Homère ne les connaît encore que sous ce nom. Comparez aussi dans l'Ancien Testament Deutéronome 3.9; Juges 3.3 ; 1Rois 11.1,5,33 ; 16.31. La ville et le pays de Sidounou sont aussi mentionnés fréquemment dans les inscriptions assyriennes.

Heth (terreur). C'est le nom de la tribu cananéenne avec laquelle Abraham fut en relation à Hébron (Genèse 23.3 ; 25.9 etc.). D'après Juges 1.26, elle occupait aussi les environs de Béthel et d'après Josué 1.4, son nom désignait quelquefois tous les Cananéens. Selon d'autres passages (2Samuel 11.3 ; 1Rois 10.29 ; 11.3 ; 2Rois 7.6), les Héthiens étaient un peuple considérable formant plusieurs Etats dans la Syrie actuelle.

Les noms semblables de Khiti chez les Egyptiens et de Chatti chez les Assyriens désignent évidemment un peuple habitant la même contrée. Les monuments égyptiens portent une quantité d'inscriptions racontant les guerres des Pharaons de la 18° et de la 19° dynastie (temps de la servitude d'Egypte) avec cet Etat puissant qui leur barrait le chemin de la Babylonie. Ces données ont été confirmées par la découverte faite en Syrie et jusqu'en Asie-Mineure de nombreux monuments appartenant à une civilisation différente de celles des Egyptiens et des Babyloniens et qui ne peut être attribuée qu'à ce peuple.

D'après toutes ces données, les Héthiens étaient probablement une tribu cananéenne considérable qui avait précédé les populations sémitiques en Syrie et dont une colonie existait au milieu des tribus du sud. Chez les peuples étrangers, comme quelquefois chez les Israélites, ce nom servait à désigner l'ensemble des tribus cananéennes. Notre chapitre et le Pentateuque en général ne connaît encore que la tribu héthienne du sud. L'ordre suivi (Héthiens, Jébusiens, Amorrhéens) coïncide, en effet, avec celui de Nombres 13.29. Or, dans ce passage, les espions énumèrent ces peuples dans l'ordre dans lequel ils les avaient rencontrés, en venant du Sud.

La postérité de Canaan était nombreuse, riche et bien établie, bien qu'elle soit victime de la malédiction divine, à juste titre. Ceux qui sont placés sous la malédiction de Dieu peuvent réussir et prospérer en ce monde ; nous ne pouvons prétendre bénéficier de l'amour ou de la haine, de la bénédiction ou de la malédiction, par ce qui se qui se trouvait « avant » nous, mais par ce qui est « en » nous.

La malédiction divine est une terrible réalité. Il peut s'agir, peut-être, d'une malédiction secrète, spécifique à l'âme, active, mais invisible de l'extérieur ; cela peut être aussi une écharde qui n'en finit pas de faire souffrir ; le jour de la colère divine est réservé aux pécheurs. Bien que Sem ou Japhet possèdent l'excellence de la bénédiction de l'Éternel, Canaan possède toutefois une meilleure terre que la leur. Abram et sa postérité sont sous la bénédiction divine ; ils sont sous la descendance d'Héber, et de là, proviennent les Hébreux.

Combien il est meilleur d'être comme Héber, le père d'une lignée d'hommes droits et honnêtes, plutôt que le chef d'une famille ne recherchant que la puissance, la richesse mondiale ou la vanité ! La bonté est une chose vraiment magnifique.
