La promesse qui avait été faite à Agar, au sujet de son fils, est ici répétée, pour l'encourager. Cela nous enseigne à quel point nous devons rester vigilants envers les enfants et les jeunes, ne sachant pas quel avenir Dieu leur a réservé. Dans ce passage, Dieu a dirigé Agar vers le puits d'eau. Beaucoup de personnes en quête de réconfort, dépérissent de jour en jour, ne discernant pas la raison de leur épreuve. Il y a un puits d'eau près d'elles : la grâce divine est a leur portée, mais elles ne prennent pas de le regarder, jusqu'à ce que Dieu leur ouvre les yeux pour remédier à leur pitoyable état.
Paran était un endroit sauvage, idéal pour un homme qui aime l'isolement, comme Ismaël. Nous constatons dans notre texte que ceux qui sont nés en dehors d'un mariage légitime affrontent la rudesse de ce monde, alors que les enfants de la promesse se dirigent inlassablement vers le Canaan céleste. Dieu cependant était près d'Ismaël ; celui-ci était sous une complète dépendance divine.
