Israël. Ce nom peut signifier Dieu combat, comme Samuel signifie Dieu exauce, ou Daniel, Dieu juge. Mais l'explication qui suit conduit plutôt au sens : Celui qui combat Dieu, qui lutte avec lui.

Cependant le premier sens est renfermé dans le second ; car pour que l'homme puisse lutter avec Dieu, il faut que Dieu condescende à s'approcher de lui, à se mettre à sa portée, à combattre lui-même avec l'homme.

Avec Dieu et les hommes, littéralement : avec Dieu et hommes. Esaü et tous les ennemis qui pourraient se présenter sont d'avance vaincus, du moment où Dieu lui-même s'est rendu.

      55 Early in the morning, Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them. Laban departed and returned to his place.
