22 à 26 Joseph

Arbre fertile au bord d'une source. Image de la fécondité et de la prospérité. Comparez Psaumes 1.3 ; Jérémie 17.8

Ses branches : il y a littéralement ses filles.

23 et 24 Comme son ancêtre, la tribu de Joseph aura de nombreux ennemis. Mais Dieu sera avec elle, comme avec Joseph., et lui donnera tout ensemble force de résistance (son arc reste ferme) et promptitude dans l'attaque (ses bras et ses mains, littéralement : les bras de ses mains, sont rendus agiles).

Par celui qui est le berger... Dans l'interprétation de ce passage très difficile, nous nous en tenons à la ponctuation massorétique, qui nous paraît offrir encore le meilleur sens.

La bénédiction de Joseph est complète. Ce que Jacob indique à son sujet, se situe autant dans l'histoire que dans la prophétie. Jacob rappelle les difficultés et les traits ardents contre lesquels il a lutté, lors des tentations qu'il avait autrefois endurées. Sa foi n'a pas failli, mais au travers de ses épreuves, il a pu supporter tous ses fardeaux avec fermeté et n'a rien fait d'inconvenant.

Toute notre force pour lutter contre les tentations et supporter les afflictions, vient de Dieu ; Sa grâce est suffisante.

Joseph est devenu le berger d'Israël, il a pris soin de son père et de sa famille ; il est également le rocher d'Israël, une base et un appui solides. Par ces faits accomplis, comme par beaucoup d'autres choses, Joseph était une image remarquable du Bon Berger, la Pierre angulaire de toute l'église de Dieu.

Des bénédictions sont promises à la postérité de Joseph, identiques aux éternelles bénédictions spirituelles destinées à ceux qui sont en Christ. Jacob a béni tous ses fils, mais particulièrement Joseph, « qui a été séparé de ses frères ».

Il a non seulement été exilé en Égypte, mais « séparé » aussi, par son éminente dignité, et par sa consécration à Dieu. Le texte parle de Benjamin comme d'un loup qui déchire. Jacob a été guidé dans ses propos, par esprit de prophétie et non par affection naturelle ; sinon, il aurait mentionné avec plus de tendresse, Benjamin, son fils bien-aimé. Le patriarche a prévu et prédit seulement que Benjamin devait être une tribu guerrière, forte et audacieuse, et qu'elle devait s'enrichir avec le butin acquis sur ses ennemis ; cette tribu devait être très active. L'apôtre Paul était lui-même de cette tribu, Romains 11:1; Philippiens 3:5 ; au début de sa vie, il « dévorait sa proie » en persécuteur, mais à la fin, il a « conquis son butin » par la prédication ; il a partagé les bénédictions du Lion de la tribu de Juda, étant soutenu par Christ dans ses victoires !
